India vs Ireland: Bumrah Wins the Man of the Match

<p>India took on <a href="https://www.caribbeancricket.org/group-a-of-the-2024-t20-world-cup/">Ireland</a> for their first game of the 2024 T20 World Cup at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York today, the infamous venue set to host the all-important India vs Pakistan game as well. Not only was it India’s first game, but the men in Green and White also took the field for the first time in the ongoing T20 World Cup. India’s star players performed as per expectations, and as a result of all-round brilliance, India completely outshined Ireland to win by 8 wickets. However, it wasn’t India’s performance that was the highlight of the day; it was the pitch and the conditions of the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium that again went under the scrutiny of the pundits and fans. A couple of nasty blows and such a low-scoring, slow pitch make it concerning for the India vs Pakistan clash. Despite all the pitch debate, it was brilliance from the Indian batters.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Toss and Innings Breakdown</h2>



<p>Rohit Sharma of India called it right at the toss and decided to field first, which was an obvious decision for any team winning the toss on this track in New York. Paul Stirling of Ireland also expressed that the toss was a very crucial part of the game and that winning it would have been ideal, as they would have also chosen to bowl first.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">First Innings</h2>



<p>Arshdeep and Siraj started things for India with the ball, while the Irish captain and Balbirnie opened the innings for Ireland. Arshdeep struck on the first ball of the third over, taking the crucial wicket of the Ireland captain. Five balls later, Arshdeep also sent Balbirnie back to the dressing room on the last ball of the third over. With Arshdeep and Siraj bowling absolute thunderbolts and Bumrah joining in for the last over of the powerplay, the Indian bowlers didn’t give away anything to the Irish batters. However, the Irish batters managed not to lose any more wickets and ended the powerplay with a score of 26 for 2.</p>



<p>Hardik joined the party after the end of the powerplay and, on the last ball of his very first over, uprooted the wicket of Tucker. The Indian bowlers never let any Irish batter settle, using their pace and accuracy to keep Ireland on the backfoot the entire time. Ireland lost one wicket each in the next five overs, with Bumrah, Siraj, and Axar taking one wicket each, while Hardik Pandya got two scalps. A few overs later, Bumrah took another wicket, and Mohammad Siraj, along with Pant executing an easy run-out, wrapped up the first innings, with Ireland&#8217;s total reading 96 all out.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Second Innings</h2>



<p>With this looking like an easy total, everyone expected some fight from Ireland, especially as the pitch was behaving unpredictably. It seemed possible for Ireland to take 4-5 wickets and go down with respect. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli entered the field together, putting to rest the important question of who would open with Rohit. The Indian captain got off to a strong start with a few glorious hits, putting India in the driver&#8217;s seat in the first couple of overs. However, Mark Adair took the dangerous scalp of Virat Kohli on the fourth ball of the third over. <strong>Fun Fact:</strong> <em><a href="https://www.espncricinfo.com/cricketers/virat-kohli-253802">Virat Kohli</a> averages only 3.33 against Ireland, his lowest against any team in T20 Internationals</em>.</p>



<p>Then, coming back from a long rest, Rishabh Pant joined Rohit Sharma at the crease, and both played some extraordinary cricket. On the last ball of the 10th over, Rohit played a shot towards the leg side and took two runs, reaching 52 off 37 balls before retiring hurt, gesturing towards his shoulder and looking unhappy. However, it wasn’t something serious. Suryakumar Yadav, who followed after Rohit, got out after playing only four balls. With five runs needed, Rishabh Pant finished things off with an exceptional reverse scoop six against McCarthy.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Man of the Match</h2>



<p>Jasprit Bumrah, the spearhead of the Indian fast bowling attack, won the Player of the Match award for his outstanding spell, conceding just 6 runs, taking two wickets in 3 overs, and delivering 13 dot balls. The form of Indian bowlers, especially Bumrah, is a positive sign for India ahead of the all-important clash on June 9th. This Man of the Match performance will undoubtedly boost the confidence of both Bumrah and the Indian team going forward.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Nature of the Surface</h2>



<p>So far, only two games have been played at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, with reports indicating that two different pitches have been used. The stadium reportedly has a total of four pitches. However, the pitches in both games have been criticized as terrible and well below standard by cricket pundits. Many believe the stadium is not ready to host international cricket, citing the uneven bounce and pace of the pitch as dangerous for players&#8217; safety, with several players already suffering a few minor blows. Critics have not only called out the ICC for the subpar pitches but also questioned their decision to host games in the USA. Let’s take a look at the views of some experts:</p>
