Shai Diego Hope is no longer a rising star; he is, in fact, an established cricketer who is well on his way to crafting a fine legacy within West Indies cricket and beyond. At 30, Hope has cemented his position as a pillar of the West Indies team, showcasing his talent and consistently producing the results for the Men in Maroon.

Early Life and Background Shai Hope

Born on 10th November 1993 in Saint Michael, Barbados, Shai Hope’s cricket journey began at an early age. He is a product of Queen’s College in Saint James, Barbados, where he pursued his secondary schooling. Furthering his education, he attended Bedes Senior School in England under the guidance of former Sussex captain Alan Wells. During his time at Bedes, Hope showcased his talent by guiding the 1st XI to the national 20/20 final and scoring a half-century despite a losing cause against Millfield.

Hope has cricket in his blood, with an elder brother, Kyle Hope, who also plays cricket at the professional level. Shai even considered remaining in the United Kingdom with the aim to qualify to play for the England cricket team. However, destiny had other plans as he chose to represent West Indies, making his international debut in Test cricket against England on 1st May 2015.

International Cricket

Since his debut, Shai Hope has represented the West Indies in all three formats of the game. While he has shown glimpses of his potential in Test and T20 cricket, it is the One-Day International (ODI) format where Hope truly stands out. In the ODI format, he is without a donut in the same category as players like Virat Kohli, Babar Azam, Joe Root, Kane Williamson, and Steve Smith. His consistency in ODI cricket is commendable, averaging just over 50 in 124 matches at a strike rate of 77.58, including 16 centuries and 25 fifties. Hope was also honored with the captaincy of the One-Day team of the West Indies and took on the charge at the start of 2023, and despite a disappointing World Cup Qualifiers last year, he remains the captain.

Major Achievements

From his Test heroics at Headingley to his One Day masterclass in Visakhapatnam, Hope has experienced a fair share of great moments in his career. Apart from international cricket, he has played in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Pakistan Super League (PSL), County Cricket, and the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). He has represented the Barbados Royals and Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Caribbean Premier League.

Thanks to his 2017 heroics at the founding home of cricket, Hope became one of the few to score centuries in both innings of a Test match. It was also the first time in over a century that a batter scored hundreds in both innings. With six consecutive fifties, he holds the record for the third-most consecutive fifties in One-Day Cricket. He is also the third fastest to reach 3000 ODI runs.

Well, let’s also take a look at Hope’s top 5 knocks in international cricket:

  • 123 off 134*: Took West Indies out from the jaws of defeat and helped tie the game while chasing a target of 321 against mighty India at their home.
  • 127 off 134: A valiant effort versus Pakistan away from home in Multan.
  • 109 off 83*: Hope’s brilliance in West Indies’ highest ODI run-chase of 326 at home against England, where he scored an unbeaten 109.
  • 128 off 115*: A memorable knock from Hope against South Africa at Buffalo Park, East London, led West Indies to an iconic victory.
  • 118 off 211*: In the second innings of the second test, while chasing a massive target of 322 against England at Headingley, Shai Hope played one of the best Test knocks of recent times and led the Windies to a historic win.

Playing Style of Shai Hope

Shai Hope’s batting style is reminiscent of old-school classical cricket. He is a proper technician who relies heavily on his technique and balance. His elegant stroke play and ability to adapt to different game situations make him a versatile batsman. His batting style has often been compared to the likes of Williamson and Babar, indicating his capability to adjust to different formats and styles of cricket.

Is He Only a One-Day Player?

While Shai Hope’s ODI credentials are undeniable, there is a perception that he is primarily a one-day player. However, this is far from the truth. Hope has shown glimpses of his potential in Test cricket and T20s as well. Though his Test numbers are not as impressive as his ODI stats, with 1726 runs in 38 matches, including two centuries, he has displayed the ability to perform at the highest level.

Moreover, in T20Is, despite limited opportunities due to the abundance of power hitters in the West Indies, he has managed to play 28 matches, scoring 509 runs at an average of 21.10 and a strike rate of 125.36. He is the solution to West Indies’ batting woes across all formats, including T20. Just like Williamson and Babar, he has the skill to adapt to different formats and styles. West Indies cricket needs to have more faith in him.

Future Prospects

Shai Hope’s future in international cricket looks promising. With the upcoming T20 World Cup on the horizon, he could be a vital cog in the West Indies batting lineup. The conditions of the T20 World Cup are expected to suit a batsman like Hope, and his ability to bring stability and calmness to the batting lineup will be crucial for the West Indies. He can actually be that X-factor in the Windies lineup for the 2024 T20 World Cup.
